This gound skink climbed up on a stump in Tampa, Florida's Lettuce Lake Park.
The ground skink (scincella lateralis) is found most often in open woodland with a lot of leaf litter. They range from northern Mexico through the lower elevations of the eastern half of the United States.It only rarely climbs trees and usually moves like a snake wiggling their bodies through the leaf litter on the forest floor.
They are mostly active during the day eating tiny insects, spiders and other invertebrates.
They range in color from golden brown to almost black. The are usually a coppery brown with a dark stripe on each side of the body.
