Description
Green turtles can hold their breath for hours at a time and are more agile swimming in the ocean than they are crawling on land. I’ve seen them both in the water, while I’ve been diving, and also on the beach. They have existed for 110 million years, but today they are endangered. The primary threat to Sea turtles is entanglement in fishing lines, nets & traps. Once entangled the turtles usually drown. Other threats include their consumption of plastic bags & trash in the ocean & beach, over-harvesting of their eggs & meat, hits by watercraft and loss of beach nesting sites due to development & global warming (from sea-level rise). Furthermore, the increase in sand temperature where they lay their eggs is resulting in fewer males being born. Recent studies have reported that in some areas only females are being born now. Part of the 100 WILD ANIMAL MINI-PRINTS series. (There is a larger print of the turtle, with hand-painted eyes, in the "Our Story" series)
