Description
"Great Egret at Seven-Mile Bridge, Florida Keys" by Catherine Sherman.
A great egret (Ardea alba) stands in shallow water looking for a meal at Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys. Behind the egret is a section of seven-mile bridge, which is part of the Overseas Highway that connects the islands of the Florida Keys.
The Great Egret is the symbol of the National Audubon Society, one of the oldest environmental organizations in North America. Audubon was founded to protect birds from being killed for their feathers.
Great Egrets were hunted nearly to extinction for their plumes in the late nineteenth century, sparking conservation movements and some of the first laws to protect birds.
