Description
A Giant Waxy Monkey Frog at the frog exhibit at the Rochester Museum and Science Center in Rochester, New York. The many frogs exhibited gave many great opportunities to photograph them up close.
The Phyllomedusa sauvagii is known by several names, the waxy monkey tree frog, waxy monkey frog or painted-bellied tree frog. As stated in it's name, the frog lives in the trees and does not need to return to the ground during the mating season. The frog lays its eggs down the middle of a leaf and folds the leaf to protect the eggs inside. The leaf is attached to a branch that is suspended over a stream to allow the hatching tadpoles drop into the water.
The frog rubs waxy secretions produced its body all over its skin to protect itself from disease. These secretions contain hundreds of bio-active compounds that fight infection, and analgesics that provide pain relief. The hallucinogenic properties of the waxy secretions were used in shamanic rituals by tribes located in the Amazon.
The frogs are about 2 to 3 inches in length. The females are larger than males. The frogs walk rather than hop looking more like a monkey as they travel. They are very calm, careful creatures that bask in the sun with their legs pulled underneath them and hunt for insects at night.
They live in Central and South America.
The Rochester Museum and Science Center has over 12 million items in their collection. The exhibits highlights the rich history of the Rochester area. You will see exhibits that tell of the 400 years of cooperation and conflict between Western New Yorks native Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) inhabitants and the Europeans, Rochester's Underground Railroad and view locally excavated mastadons and see views of upstate New York hasn't been seen in thousands even millions of years. My favorite is viewing the collection of animal and bird specimens.
