Description
Known as The Boy General during the American Civil War,George Armstrong Custer is one of those characters who has been portrayed as both a hero and villain of the American frontier. For the first century or so after his death he was seen as a tragic heroic figure who along with 210 men under his command met a brutal end in the famed 'Battle of the Little Bighorn', when he bit off more than he could chew. He was portrayed heroically in film by likes of Ronald Reagan, Errol Flynn, Robert Shaw and many others. Then in the 1970 film, 'Little Big Man' came another interpretation of him as a narcissistic fool, and as the terrible plight and treatment of America's native people in the nineteenth century was pushed to the front of the American conscience with books like, 'Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,' Custer's place in history to a different and darker shape. Wherever the truth lies, Custer's place in American history as a controversial figure looks certain.
