This little known fort protected Saint Augustine from attack from the rear. The name Matanzas means the slaughter. In 1565 the Spanish killed many French soldiers who where ship wrecked here when their ship was blown off course trying to attack St Augustine. In 1740 the English where the threat and the Spanish built this fort to guard St Augustine from an attack from the rear.
