Description
While hiking in a forested area of the wet, Hilo side of the Big Island in Hawai'i, I looked up to find a tall hibiscus tree with these glorious pink blossoms. The extremely long stamen made these flowers a vision of elegance against the sparkling, late afternoon sunlight, dappling the dark forest. Although the pink color leads me to believe this is a hybrid hibiscus, the form of the flower, especially the extremely long stamen, appear very much like the native Hawaiian hibiscus, kokiʻo keʻokeʻo (hibiscus arnottianus). This native species is white in color (the name koki'o means shinning white). While I marveled at the beauty of these flowers, I also wondered about the history of how the tree came to be where it was and who might have planted it there.

This is a gorgeous flower which you have so superbly captured. Having spent an afternoon in the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden I am envious of the botanical bounty that you enjoy!
Heidi Fickinger replied:
Many thanks to you Paul. I am a member of several botanical gardens on this side of the Island and visit them several times a month, both for photography and also just to marvel at the exquisite variety of beauty. This particular hibiscus was out in the wild. A delightful surprise. Aloha
