In Oregon, the cloud cover was so thick, even going up a small hill put me in the middle of thick, sunless fog.
Hiking South of Lincoln City, the left side of the trail drops off immediately, and although I couldn't see just how far down it went, it's a safe assumption that not much would have stopped a fall straight down to the ocean from where I was. A safe guess would be a few hundred metres down.
As a result, the trees grow very differently on such a strong slope, so this was one of the clearing areas on the way back up.
