Description
Sunlight warms the golds and oranges of an autumn afternoon. Life is peaceful here.
Indeed, wandering through the rural meadows and fields of the country, far away from the sound of cars and phones and trains and people calling out and the various sounds we associate with the city, we are conscious of the true quiescence of the country and how, in this quiet, we are able to think.
For some people, encountering this quiet – this true quiet – is initially disconcerting. How can one think when all one can hear is the breeze through the air, a few insects chirruping, and the birds gently repeating their lithesome song?
But then, the more one encounters this silence, the more one wonders, how can one think – truly, truly think the deep, introspective, concentrated thoughts – without this silence?
Flecks of Gold invites the viewer into a meadow that is ablaze with the colors of autumn – the oranges, reds, rusts, golds, magentas, and corals of a season known for its bounty of color. There is no path, and one senses that one is working one’s way through the branches and leaves, bit by bit making headway into the gulch ahead. The very challenge of moving – without path, without road, without signage – is one of slowing down, taking time to consider, watching where one puts one feet.
How often do we do this? How often, rather, do we plow ahead without thinking, our minds on the next aspect of our very long daily list, our thoughts running over the same path that they have run before, day after day after day?
Flecks of Gold invites us to step out and away from this treadmill, to marvel at the color surrounding us, to be in awe of the majesty of the perfect, never to be repeated, autumn day.
(The image in flecks of gold is located in eastern Washington, USA, a place of many hidden fields and meadows.)
