First Light Wilderness

Description
Early dawn in the wilderness – it is a time of profound and intense silence, broken only by the chirp of the early bird. The camper and hiker who finds himself or herself in a remote, alpine landscape is in a place of tranquil beauty: there are (or should be!) no alarm clocks, radios, phones, or any other electrical gadgets that buzz, tweet, ding, or honk.
First Light Wilderness, the artwork, invites the viewer into just such a place. High in the Wallowa Mountains of Oregon, USA, a clear, cold lake awaits the morning sun. Behind the trees, we stand in the shadows, looking out onto the water’s surface where morning’s light skims across the surface, drawing out color from the shadows.
It is cool up here, very cool, and a warm jacket or blanket is not amiss. Sheltered within the firs and pines of the high, alpine woods, we escape any breeze, and it is only the cold crispness of the air the provokes a shiver. This is a time to sip, slowly, hot coffee, cocoa, or tea as we watch the sun continue to rise, the light alter, the colors grow and shift in intensity and hue.
There’s no place to be, no schedule to demand. Our very distance from “civilization” is a buffer from its pressures and anxieties. Our only task is to be silent, to reflect, to watch, to wonder – to be an observer and not a doer, to be a watcher and not someone who feels we have to control every minute, every action.
Because we can’t, you know, and the wilderness reminds us of this. No matter how proactive, creative, innovative, and aggressive we act, we cannot cause the sun to rise faster, the trees to grow taller, the mountains to move.
But we can watch. And wonder.
