Description
Along with Gregg Toland (1904-1988) John Alton (1901-1996) is considered the master cinematographer. All his other noirs are in black and white, featuring large parts of the frame in black, with extensive use of shadows elsewhere.
Some purists insist that the noir style only works in black and white. In "Slightly Scarlett" Alton has to photograph two red heads, Rhonda Fleming and Arlene Dahl. His colors are a riot of greens, pinks and Leon Shamroy inspired oranges in this RKO release based on a James M. Cain novel.
Other film noirs based on Cain novels include the earlier mentioned "Ossessione" (1943), "Double Indemnity" (1944) and "The Postman Always Rings Twice" (1946) with Lana Turner (1920-1995) and John Garfield (1913-1952). "Postman" is Cain's first novel (1934).

The much more graphic, sadomasochistic 1981 Bob Rafelson directed neo-film noir remake is considered a misfire.
