With the critical and financial failure of "Duck Soup," the Marx Brothers signed with MGM. Producer Irving Thalberg (1899-1936) wanted them to be less anarchic and more sympathetic.
They went on the road to show off the film's new routines before live audiences. After cutting some nine minutes of footage the last cut was a hit. The two final previews had been failures.
One of their funniest routines from "Opera" is the crowded cabin scene. Buster Keaton worked uncredited on the screen play.
