Description
One of the most powerful and touching parts of the Oklahoma City Memorial (Oklahoma, USA) is the Field of Empty Chairs. The 168 chairs are hand-crafted from glass, bronze, and stone and represent the lives taken on April 19, 1995, with 19 of the chairs representing the children killed. They stand in nine rows to represent each floor of the building, and each chair bears the name of someone killed in the blast. Each person's chair is on the row (or the floor) on which the person worked or was located when the bomb went off. The chairs are also grouped according to the blast pattern, with the most chairs nearest the most heavily damaged portion of the building. The field is located on the footprint of the Murrah Building and sit in front of the reflecting pool. At night, the lighting is very poignant and somber. On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh parked a Ryder rental truck filled with explosives in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, OK, USA. The resulting explosion at 9:02 am killed 168 people. This memorial was constructed on the location to honor the victims, survivors, rescuers, and all who were affected by the event. In a larger sense, we across the country and around the world were affected by the event, and you will find tears welling up, maybe even running down your cheeks, when you step on the grounds. Nearly 25 years on, the wounds are still there. The symbolism of the many facets of the memorial is powerful.
