Description
This spectacular flower is the endangered Maiapilo (capparis sandwichiana). I have looked for years to find this flower to photograph it in its own environment and found an area that had several plants in full bloom. The flowers of this beauty look like fireworks. The flowers bloom in the last light of the afternoon. The flowers bloom in white and by morning have changed color to a pale lavender, mauve color. By mid-morning the flowers begin to wilt. When they first bloom, bees and moths and ants come to feed on the pollen. Just as I took this image, a bee was homing in to collect pollen from the laden stigma.

The area these plants were growing in when I found them was in deep shade in a coastal forest area. I had the luck to spot this one in a shaft of afternoon light. Much aloha Leif.
