Painted Study of Hadrian

I captured an image of this bust at the Ancient Rome: Age of the Caesars exhibition at Cranbrook's Science Museum this spring and decided to make a painting out of it.

After finishing this study tonight I decided to research Hadrian because his name was familiar, and I was reminded ironically, that he is known for building Hadrian's Wall, which marked the northern limit of Britannia in AD 122. The Romans just could not conquer those ungovernable Scots, so he stopped the conquest and built a 73 mile long stone wall. One theory for the building of the wall says "Hadrian's Wall was partly constructed to reflect the power of Rome and was used as a political point by Hadrian. Once its construction was finished, it is thought to have been covered in plaster and then whitewashed: its shining surface reflected the sunlight and was visible for miles around."
