Description
Elephants use their trunks to greet other elephants, pick things up, sound warnings, or slurp up water for drinking and splashing on themselves. They use their tusks as extended teeth to gather food, protect their trunk, lift and move things, strip bark from trees, dig holes to find water in times of drought, and for defense. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists African elephants as "vulnerable" and Asian elephants as "endangered". One of elephants' greatest threats is being killed for their ivory tusks in the illegal ivory trade. Elephants are also losing their habitats to expanding human settlements, agricultural developments, and the construction of infrastructure such as roads and fencing that fragment their environment. Part of the 100 WILD ANIMAL MINI-PRINTS series.
