Description
From recent trip to Death Valley National Park. When I started my trip the temperatures were above average for location I flew out of in Northeast PA. Upon arriving in Las Vegas temperatures were in the low 40's. It never went above mid 60's and often was much colder in early morning and some of the elevations we visited. This dramatically changed my perception of what a desert was supposed to be like. The second perception to drastically change was my thoughts as to the geography. I had envisioned a vast unending view of dunes and sand. Instead I found mountains, canyons, and the occasional oasis with accompanying tourist gift shops, lodging and gas. To be sure the views are a treat for the eyes but there are also long stretches of rocky barren ground. Spring flowers were nowhere in sight and in fact we were told they would be later this year than normal. Flooding that plagued much of California this year also impacted the park by washing out access roads so that popular destinations for photographers like Scotty's Castle and Artists Palette were shut down. Since there were so many other locations to photograph that inconvenience was overlooked. In fact there is so much to see and do that several more trips will be necessary.
