Description
I was out bird watching near a stand of wild trees that edge a field near me and this pretty Dark-eyed Junco bird landed close by in a bare branch that in fall starts to gather lichen spots on it, making it gray toned. I thought the bird’s tones matched it pretty well. I think the roundness of this sweet little bird makes it a cutie.
Dark-eyed Juncos (Junco hyemalis) are abundant and widespread in the United States. They winter in semi-open habitats near forests and woodlands. They mostly forage on the ground and eat seeds and insects. They are songbirds and nest on the ground in hidden areas. Fun fact is they are also called Snowbirds because they usually show up in the winter time in other states and really stand out when the ground is covered in snow.
