A curved gravel road leads to a fenced ranch in Austin County, Texas, USA. Photographed in color in late January 2022 to capture the special beauty of winter in Texas.

Some of the grass is still green, but the weather has turned cold. On this day, the high was about 55 degrees, and close to freezing at night. In the spring, these hills will likely be covered with wildflowers, especially if the owner has seeded them. But winter brings more rustic tones of golden grasses on the rolling hills, with scenes of cattle grazing and bales of hay.

Here, the wood fences and leading lines guide the eye and invite one to explore the beautiful landscape beneath a cloudless blue sky. Some cattle are seen here, too, grazing in perfect peace. The rustic scenery with various types of buildings, including what appears to be an old barn, depicts a lifestyle that often draws city-dwellers to purchase a second home in the country or move here permanently to enjoy the simple life.

In Texas the basic difference between a ranch and a farm, as I understand it, is that a ranch has livestock, specifically cattle, and a farm does not. This image will also be available in black-and-white in my Rural Texas and other Texas galleries.
