Description
In the midst of winter, a small grove of cottonwood trees stands bravely against an onslaught of snow.
Cottonwood Grove, the artwork, invites the viewer to put on their boots and coat, and step out for a cool country walk. And while there is a path, it is covered by the snow, and no one has walked on it yet to break through the path.
Evening approaches, and the sky is turning a coral pink, just visible in the background, through the trees. It is not a strong, pulsating coral and pink – the type of sunset we expect in the summer when the sun goes down in a blaze of glory. Because this is winter, the sun is low in the sky, and its sunset is diffused, understated, quiet.
The trees themselves are a series of branches and twigs, so different from the way they looked in the summer, when their leaves were so abundant that we barely noticed the branches. But in winter, different aspects of the landscape come through, and the tall, graceful form of the tree itself makes itself known.
Can you hear the quiet? When the viewer stops walking, there is a stillness so profound that one can almost hear one’s thoughts. Walking on brings on the sound of foot brushing into the snow, and because this is powdery snow, the sound is whispery, not crunchy.
And the snow itself – we always think it is white, the same way we say that the sea is blue, but the very whiteness of the snow forms a canvas upon which a palette of reflective color is painted. Looking closely, we see a hint of cool blue in the snow, a blue reflected from the waning light in the sky overhead.
Step into Cottonwood Grove and simply enjoy the stillness.
