Description
COOLING HIS PRIVATES by PHOTOGRAPHER RICK FURMANEK
While hiking in 100+ degree weather a couple of years ago I sighted this adorable Harris's antelope squirrel trying to keep himself cool in the heat of the day. He tolerated my presence as his desire to regulate his body temperature was the greater priority. Ref. 8662

The Harris' Antelope squirrel practices what is known as "heat dumping". When their body temperature reaches its upper limits they will get into a cool shady spot and lay down spread-eagle with their belly pressed against the cool ground. In this case, on this cool rock. This releases the heat from its body to help cool the animal down. Notice its tail, they often hold it over their head like an umbrella, helping to shade their bodies. I have photographed them doing this very thing at my desert acre of joy.
