Colors In A Boulder

Description
One of my SOLD images. Makes a beautiful pillow or tote bag, iPhone case or shower curtain. Please check out your choice of prints and products and treat yourself to something unique!
To the naked eye, the subject looks like a big gray rock, large enough to be called a boulder. On the top, which I photographed, are white circles of various sizes. Convenient to sit on, but not sure it was worthy of a photo. Still, I was curious enough to try, using a Canon G7X.
This 16x9 widescreen picture captures colors usually seen on its top surface only by ultraviolet light, which can illuminate minerals that elude the naked eye. I have brought out those colors using digital arts effects, and the result is a large abstract image (in what could also be called minimalism) that would fit on a television screen or frame of your choice for the dining room or over the sofa. It could also be cropped to fit a product of your choice.
In photography, the colors of rock are captured—but seen only after processing with certain techniques that bring out the fluorescent minerals. Light can illuminate the minerals. That light emission is called fluorescence. X-rays and certain mineral-detectors bring out the colors of hidden mineral elements if you’re looking for them in the field. In this case I used various techniques in PhotoShop Elements. (A little play on words.) Whether consolidated or unconsolidated mineral matter, these rare earth elements are beautiful. They remind us of the colors hidden from our eyes throughout nature. I have even found an array of colors in tree bark. You will find that image in my Trees Gallery.

Such an edifying comment, Beverly! Thank you. Seeing white rings on a brownish-gray boulder did make me curious. So glad my curiosity led me down this creative path, where I found great beauty in a rock--and a new appreciation for abstract art.

Thank you, John Bailey, for featuring my "Colors in a Boulder" on the homepage of Images That Excite You. I had fun discovering how many beautiful colors are hidden in what looked like just a big brownish gray rock. If one zooms in on the details, textures can be seen too. Fascinating!
