Close Of Day
Artist
Steve Henderson

Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
The last light of evening's sun casts its glow over a lone tree by the stream.
This is the Close of Day in a rural, country setting, a place where it is silent and still all day except for the sound of deer rustling by. At this time of day, however, it is especially silent, especially still, and one is called to pause and watch as the sunlight wanes, and the shadows grow over the water.
Close of Day, the artwork, invites the viewer into this place of tranquility and peace. There are no cars here, no constant traffic. Although there is a road overhead, to the right of the image of the painting, above and out of view, few people travel on its graveled surface because it leads to one isolated country house. Down here at the banks of the stream, the life that goes on is life that respects its landscape and settings – the deer, the silent owls, the small rodents – who go about their business without cell phones.
In this hushed place, the viewer steps lightly down the bank, carefully because it is steep, and at the edge of the stream pauses a moment to sit and watch the water of the stream trickle by. Time of reflection and peace like this is as necessary to our inner being as water is to the planet itself.
The artwork, Close of Day, is executed in an impressionist style, with strong, bold strokes of the brush creating the branches of the trees, the texture of the grass, the form of the rocks. From a distance, it looks not necessarily photographic, but realistic and formed, but as one steps closer, the thick paint on the surface of the canvas become apparent. Light cast across this surface adds its own sense of atmosphere, and like the landscape itself, the painting changes in personality depending upon the time of day, and how the light streams upon it.

Thank you, Jasna. It is a beautiful, quiet place -- one of those hidden treasures that people frequently walk past without knowing that it's there. There's good reason to slow down and look around .. .
