Clearwater Revival, the artwork, invites the viewer to join the artist on a hike up in the Wallowa Mountains of Oregon, a place of steep, winding trails that lead to quiet, tranquil lakes like this one.
Depending on the season, one can meet quite a few people up at these lakes – from hikers who carry up their tent and food for a multiple-day stay, to locals taking a “little run” up to the top and then back down again (some of these little runs are 6-9 miles up, and then back down).
Even with people about, the trails and lakes of the Wallowa Mountain region are places of peace, tranquility, and quiet. The water is still and clear, reflecting the sky above, and the air is crisp in the morning, warming up during the autumn afternoon before cooling down again for the night.
There is a sense of being embraced by the surrounding mountains, and sitting on the bank, one looks out into the clear lake and simply lets the thoughts wander by. This is not a time to think about what needs to be done at the office, or plan the next scheduled oil change for the car. Far from the sounds and activity of the city, the mountain landscape of Clearwater Revival commands its place – long after we leave and are back to our schedules and obligations, the lake will stay pristine, the mountains will stand strong, the small animals will scurry from one spot to the next as they engage in the activities of their day.
Clearwater Revival is a reminder to us that life is far, far more than projects at work, or tomorrow’s episode of whatever television show is trending today, or the bills that need to be paid. Clearwater Revival calls out to us to stop, listen to the silence, and marvel at the beauty of the Earth.
