Description
The City of Arts and Sciences is a cultural and architectural complex in the city of Valencia, Spain. It is the most important modern tourist destination in the city of Valencia and one of the 12 Treasures of Spain.
The City of Arts and Sciences is situated at the end of the former riverbed of the river Turia, which was drained and rerouted after a catastrophic flood in 1957. The old riverbed was turned into a picturesque sunken park.
Designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela, the project began the first stages of construction in July 1996, and was inaugurated on April 16, 1998 with the opening of L'Hemisfèric. The last major component of the City of Arts and Sciences, El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, was inaugurated on October 9, 2005, Valencian Community Day.
I love architecture that begs the question, "Is it sculpture or a building or both." These buildings are both in my opinion. My jaw dropped when I saw them for the first time in gleaming sunlight. Unfortunately, my camera had stopped working so I had to go into the business area of Valencia and purchase a new camera so I could take pictures the last 2 days of the trip. Because I had to charge the new battery for 4 hours I couldn't get back for daylight images but I got up at 6:00 am and walked over for some sunrise images which you see here.
This is the El Pont de l'Assut de l'Or (2008) — a white cable-stayed bridge crossing the dry Turia riverbed, connecting the south side with Minorca Street, in between El Museu de les Ciències and L'Agora. The tower of the bridge, at 125 meters high, is the highest point in the city. Apparently, city residents refer to it has the harp, which I can see, and the ham, which apparently has something to do with how the ham is hung for display in stores. Either way it is quite beautiful and I'm in the harp corner.
Image was treated with digital software to acieve a "painted effect."
