Description
The statue in honour of Cristopher Columbus in the Plaza de Colon was built between 1881 and 1885, to celebrate the marriage between Alfonso XII and María de las Mercedes from Orleáns. Made from white marble, the figure of Columbus is the work of sculptor Jerónimo Suñol and the Gothic pedestal is by Arturo Mélida. This monument is outstanding due to its perfect incorporation into the square in which is it situated, with a beautiful grassy area, ponds and a large waterfall.
Beyond, the Columbus Monument you can see Julia which is the name of a 12-meter high sculpture of a girl with eyes closed eyes by Catalan sculptor Jaume Plensa,
The sculpture, which was revealed at midday in the presence of the Barcelona-born artist, will spend the rest of the year (2019) on display in the square.
