Christmas nativity decoration at a house in Altadena, California, with the Moon and Jupiter perfectly positioned just above the house, December 25 2012. It took a lot of planning to get the timing just right - about 2 hours after sunset (6:51pm). Moon ephemeris: Azimuth 95.7 degrees, Altitude 46.4 degrees, Phase 0.955 (almost full moon).
Every year, around Christmas, we drive around admiring all the decorations in our neighborhood. This year was special because we were fortunate to have an almost-full (95.5%) Moon make an appearance, along with Jupiter (you may have to squint your eyes or zoom in at high resolution by clicking your mouse to see the faint planet just above the Moon at the top of the photo). The two were in a perfect position, just above this house. The Moon rose at 3 pm on Christmas day and was at an azimuth of 96 degrees and altitude of 46 degrees when the photo was taken (6:51 pm). The Moon and Jupiter remained close together for quite a while, changing only their relative orientation, as if they were dancing, before finally drifting apart.
