Description
Chiflo Trailhead at Wild Rivers Recreation New Mexico by Debra Martz The Chiflo trailhead is located just a short distance farther down the road from Sheeps Crossing; it is the second overlook into the gorge. This stop also has sheltered picnic tables by the parking area, one just below the rim and one beside the river.
The trail makes its way down to the Rio Grande in just under half a mile, descending about 350 feet. On my first hike down to the river years ago, the sign information listed it as an easy trail. When I have to get on my bottom and scoot off of boulders with a little jump for the next step down...well I don't call it easy!! It is now listed as Moderate; I agree with that.
Once at the river there are views of large black lava rocks forming pools which slow the rushing water here, just before it reaches a set of rapids. In late summer it is difficult to get to the river due to the thicket of reeds growing at the water's edge.
Chiflo refers to the sound of the wind whistling over the mountain, according to Bureau of Land Management staff.
Wild Rivers Recreation is an area within the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument.
