Chief Joseph Mountain
Artist
Steve Henderson

Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
The last of winter's snow clings to the crevices of Chief Joseph Mountain in the Wallowa Mountain Range, Oregon.
Standing sentinel over the high landscape, Chief Joseph Mountain exudes a personality of its own, and is aptly named for both Old Chief Joseph and his son, Young Chief Joseph, of the Nez Perce tribes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Both men were strong leaders, wise in their humility, perspicacious in their reading of events and the minds of other men. Their honesty, compassion, and desire to lead their people well is one that today’s politicians would – but probably will not – do well to emulate. Indeed, it is politicians similar to the ones today who were instrumental in the rapid and drastic change of events in the lives of the Nez Perce people.
The land over which Chief Joseph Mountain looks was one of great meaning to the Nez Perce people, a place where they gathered to live during the summer and spring, when the harvest of the area was plentiful. It is a beautiful land, a land of majesty and solemnity, and one does not walk through it without feeling a sense of awe, humility, and smallness.
And though the First People who cared for and tended the land for so long no longer live there the way they once did, their spirits speak as one walks the trails, stands silently by the like, and views the craggy peaks and jagged visage of Chief Joseph Mountain and his companions. Despite the camping and pizza parlors and go-cart rides in the tourist area at the edge of the lake, the mountains surrounding stand separate and aloof from 21st century commerce, fully confident that, years hence when the buildings are empty and the people are gone, the mountains themselves will remain.

Steve, magnificent work! It is so difficult to showcase scale of something as awesome as mountains but you did just that in this oil painting!! From the rugged boulder and bare rooted foreground brush as snowy fingers grapple upward to misty points where peak and cloud dance ...this is one BREATHTAKING GLIMPSE OF BEAUTY! L/F
