Description
The Bowman and The Spearman, also known collectively as Equestrian Indians, or simply Indians, are two bronze equestrian sculptures standing as gatekeepers in Congress Plaza, at the intersection of Ida B. Wells Drive and Michigan Avenue in Chicago's Grant Park, in the U.S. state of Illinois. The sculptures were made in Zagreb by Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović and installed at the entrance of the parkway in 1928. Funding was provided by the Benjamin Ferguson Fund.
The equestrian figures are poised to shoot an arrow and throw a spear; however, neither of them holds a weapon. Although some Chicagoans believe that the bow and spear were removed from the sculptures during renovations, these objects were actually never part of the sculptures. In fact, the sculptor purposefully omitted the weapons, leaving them to the viewer’s imagination.
By removing the blue channel information, I was able to completely remove the Blue Cross-Blue Shield Tower in the background which surprise, just happens to be blue. This helps the sculpture "pop" and allows the eye to focus in on the details. I think the strong diagonal lines between the rider and the horse are compelling. The focused eyes and pursed lips of the warrior in contrast to the gasping and wild eye horse make this one of my favorite sculptures in all of Chicago.
All proceeds will be donated to Chicago's Cornerstone Community Outreach in honor of photographer Richard Cleis, 1965-2021.
