Description
A Saber Tooth Tiger (Smilodon fatalis) checks the air while resting in the nomadic hunters cave.
Palio nomadic hunters had seasonal patterns of summer, fall, winter and spring travels adjusted to take advantage of the seasonal bounties often reusing favorite camp sights year after year.
While the hunters are in other lands the Saber Tooth cat Takes advantage of the sheltering cave with the nomads art history in the background, The art tells a story of Atlatl hunting for Bison a Tool that man has hunted with for over 30,000 years.
Smilodon Saber Tooths have been found in the La brea tar pits dating back as recent as 10,000 years so it is possible the Saber Tooth has been hunted with the Atlatl in the art work.
Smilodon /ˈsmaɪlədɒn/, is an extinct genus of machairodont felid. It is perhaps the best known saber-toothed cat and lived in North America during the Pleistocene epoch (2.5 mya10,000 years ago). Several fossils have been found with one of the largest collections taken from the La Brea Tar Pits. Three species of the genus are known and they vary in size and build.
Overall, Smilodon was more robustly built than any modern cat, with particularly well-developed forelimbs and exceptionally long upper canines. Its jaw had a bigger gape than modern cats and its upper canines were slender and fragile, being adapted for precision killing. These attributes made Smilodon a specialized hunter of large herbivores like bison and camels.
Smilodon likely lived in closed habitats like forests and bush which would have provided cover for ambushing prey. Its reliance on large animals may have been the cause of its extinction. Scientists debate over whether Smilodon was a social animal. Comparison of predator responses to distress calls and the prevalence of healed injuries suggest it was social, while its small brain size and vegetated habitat suggest it was more solitary. Some fossils show signs of ankylosing spondylitis, trauma and arthritis. Smilodon went extinct 10,000 years ago.

Gerald,Once again I'm amazed at your skill in rendering a unique artwork of so much depth and detail with your coloured pencils.I have such an affinity for crayon "paintings" and rarely see them done so beautifully. The scene you have conjoured up here is so magical and mysterious. The curious expression of the tiger sniffing the air and the sense of antiquity in the cave is wonderful. And to think that he could swallow a camel or a bison ! So scary if you were a nomad! You would be a mere snack to this hungry and magnificent creature!! Your art is fantastic and so interesting. v/f
