Created with high quality Winsor and Newton Oil Paint. The artist individually beaded the head band, the band around the forehead, and around the right eye. This mask was not intended to represent any specific culture rather to encompass the religious, spiritual, and social significance of "The War Mask" itself.Traditionally war masks are intended to instill fear in the enemy when on the battlefield. However this mask was created with the intent of depicting how different cultures incorporate the use of art and masking into religious ceremonies, rights of passage and other celebrations. In some Western African Cultures a mask is worn by a dancer that then becomes "bearer" of the spirit of the mask. The dancer becomes the communicator between the tribe and the spirit. A common subject of African Mask is a women's face based in a specific culture's idea of beauty. The beadwork is red and old. The image is 24x36 in dimension.
