Cathedral And Baptistery Pisa Italy

Description
You might think that Pisa Italy is all about the tower, but when you get there you see also the magnificent Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles). I arrived in the early morning from the train station so there weren’t many people about. The clear sunny beautiful morning just made me stop and wonder at the profusion of amazing architecture stretching off to the distance. The first thing I saw was the Baptistery (the round building in the distance). Construction of this building started in 1152 and was finished in 1363. It is the largest baptistery in Italy and architecturally demonstrates the transition from Romanesque to Gothic styles. The interior is very simple but is known for its amazing acoustics which are demonstrated every 30 minutes by one of the docents. It is easy to imagine church officials intoning services and easily being heard to the farthest reaches of the building. The Baptistery also has a lean like the tower, but not as pronounced. The Cathedral (Italian: Cattedrale Metropolitana Primaziale di Santa Maria Assunta; Duomo di Pisa) is a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is a notable example of Romanesque architecture, in particular the style known as Pisan Romanesque. It is even older than the Baptistery, started in 1063, consecrated in 1118, but renovated/restored many times since. Other great religious buildings in the square are the Campanile or famous Leaning Tower (from 1173), and the Camposanto Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery from 1277). Together they represent all the phases of life: birth (the Baptistery), life (the cathedral and bell tower) and death (the cemetery). In 1987, the whole square was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
