Description
"Catalpa Flowers" by Catherine Sherman.
A flowering catalpa tree is a dramatic sight.
Catalpa flowers seem to hang like huge bouquets among the large leaves of catalpa trees lining streets in one town in Johnson County, Kansas. The blossoms brighten the trees in late Spring.
The Catalpa tree, also known as catawba, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Bignoniaceae, native to warm temperate and subtropical regions of North America, the Caribbean, and East Asia.
There are two North American species, Catalpa bignonioides (southern catalpa) and Catalpa speciosa (northern catalpa). They can be recognized by their large, heart-shaped to three-lobed leaves, showy white or yellow flowers in broad panicles. In the autumn they bear 8 to 20-inch (20–50 centimeters) long fruits that resemble a slender bean pod full of small flat seeds, each with two thin wings to aid in wind dispersal.
