Description
This bumble bee was flying about the Wild milkweed looking for the open blossoms. I am finding out bumble bees and honey bees love this plant, not just the butterflies. I think this bumble bee looks a bit casual as it flies because its legs are hanging down instead of pulled in.
Bumble bees are large hairy bees related to the Honey Bee. A female Bumble Bee has a stinger but hardly uses it and the male does not have a stinger. They control their body heat through their wing muscles. Bees are important for our survival as pollinators.
This milkweed is called Antelope Horns milkweed (Asclepias asperula) and grows mostly in prairie lands in Texas. They are beneficial for monarch butterflies to survive and are always a pleasant sight to see in the meadows.
