Description
Can you see the Jack O'Lantern? This common greenbrier (Smilax rotundifolia), growing around a Loblolly Pine Tree along the hiking path at Gordon's Pond State Park behind Whiskey Beach in Coastal Delaware decided to decorate for Halloween. This one leaf, out of millions, has the appearance and coloration of a carved pumpkin helping to celebrate with the trick-or-treat crowd for Halloween.
This example, in autumn coloration of course, is known as roundleaf greenbrier and common greenbrier. Is a woody vine native to the eastern and south-central United States and to eastern Canada. It is a common and conspicuous part of the natural forest ecosystems in much of its native range. This example was rare in shape and coloration and was found just north of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
