Title
California Wildflower Super Bloom
Artist

Description
A vast field of wildflowers in a remote part of the California desert (far from the madding crowd!). The wildflowers in this picture are California poppy (Eschscholzia californica), Goldfields (Lasthenia californica), Redstem filaree (Erodium cicutarium) and Fiddleneck (Amsinckia), in a field of wild grasses.
Also, notice the tumbleweed in the left side of the image. A tumbleweed is a structural part of the above-ground anatomy of a number of species of plants. It is a diaspore that, once mature and dry, detaches from its root or stem and rolls around in wind. It is coveted as a symbol of the American West.
We were inundated with very heavy rain here in Southern California this winter. These were the strongest storm systems to hit Southern California in many years and brought torrential rain, resulting in mudslides and flash floods, causing considerable hardship. On the bright side, we needed the rain, especially after the long 5-year drought we endured. I had been hoping for a lush spring and a bumper wildflower season. Sure enough, a rare wildflower "super bloom" has materialized, attracting record crowds to California desert trails. To get away from large crowds, I had to find my way to a remote part of the desert to this vast field of wildflowers.
