Upper Canada Village
The Saint Lawrence Seaway was a major engineering accomplishment of the 20th century. It created a seaway that allowed ocean going ships to travel all the way to the Great Lakes and gave ship access of central North America to the entire world. In building the Seaway, it was necessary to a number of villages creating the opportunity to move historical buildings from the period of the 1860's to a fantasy village along the shore of the St Lawrence river near battle sites of the war of 1812. Today visitors can travel to Upper Canada Village and see over 40 historical buildings that represent all aspects of life around the time of the 1860s. Also preserved in the village are examples of heritage crops and livestock breeds, many of which are now rarely seen. Traditional trades and crafts such as weaving, spinning and dressmaking are demonstrated by knowledgeable staff dressed in clothing of the 1860s.
