Description

Pumpkins are usually characterized by a hard orange rind with distinctive grooves. Pumpkins are a member of the gourd family, which includes cucumbers, honeydew melons, cantaloupe, watermelons and zucchini.
Pumpkins can range in size from less than one pound to more than 1,000 pounds. Miniature-sized pumpkins are typically used for decorative purposes. The five to ten pound pumpkins are most often used for making pies. Pumpkins in the 10 to 25 pound range are primarily used for jack-o-lanterns.
There are many varieties of gourds, ranging in size and shape from the small, green-and-tan striped oval kind to the large birdhouse gourds with their swan-like necks and fat bowls and others looking like weird creations of science. They all share a similar growth habit—sprawling vines with large leaves and the tendency to take over a garden plot if permitted.
Ornamental gourds are beautiful in their own unique lumpy-bumpy way, and nothing says fall like a beautiful bumper crop in the garden. In fact, they are so beautiful that many gardeners grow them purely as a decorative crop, just to spice up their plots in the fall, and add a touch of color to autumn holiday table settings and arrangements.
