Description
Bridge on the River Kwai, remembered by the epic classic movie filmed in 1957, was loosely based on a true World War II incident, and the real-life character of Lieutenant Colonel Philip Toosey. One of a number of Allied POW's, Toosey was in charge of his men from late 1942 through May 1943 when they were ordered to build two Kwai River bridges in Burma (one of steel, one of wood), to help move Japanese supplies and troops from Bangkok to Rangoon. This eleven span bridge had been dismantled by the Japanese and brought to Tamarkan from Java in 1942. Both bridges were subjected to numerous attacks by Allied aircraft during the period December 1944 to June 1945. The bridges were built and continually repaired using prisoner of war (POW) labour and was completed and operational by early February 1943. The Kwai Yai River was renamed in 1960 and was originally called the Mae Klong River.
The outdoor museum is located in Tamarkan, fifty five kilometres north of Nong Pladuk (also known as Non Pladuk), or five kilometres north of Kanchanaburi. The steel bridge was repaired and preserved as a landmark of the hardships of the pacific during WWII, along with other vehicles and equipment and close by is the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery with over 1500 graves. This photograph was taken in the 1960s on 35mm film.
