Description
This blue-footed booby and chick were photographed on the island of Espanola in the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador). The male and female share parental responsibilities. After the female lays two or three eggs, both male and female boobies take turns incubating the eggs, while the nonsitting bird keeps watch. After hatching, the male provides food for the young in the first part of their lives because of his specialized plunge diving/feeding. The female takes over when the demand is higher. Chicks feed off the regurgitated fish in the adult's mouth. The Galápagos Islands are protected by national park personnel, and the islands are also categorized as a World Heritage Site.
