Description
Black Capped Vireo Surprise No 4 of 4 by Debra Martz
We had been hiking for miles along trails since early moring in search of this tiny and secretive Black-capped Vireo but had only heard its song. We spent a great deal of time searching with binoculars when we would hear it. SO, as we came to the end of the trail near the Visitor's Center of South Llano River State Park, we decided to step into the blind and see if any birds were there. It was 12:30pm, very warm and not a great time to find birds. But you just never know ... for whatever reason a large variety of birds were coming to the water feature near the back fence. I guess it was bath day!! AND then the SURPRISE when in flew this Black-capped Vireo to a tree at the back where I was watching a Yellow-breasted Chat. Of course, in a split second it was gone but I kept watching and watching. SURPRISE again when it returned and flew over to the water feature and according to the inscribed time on my images in camera it stayed 3 seconds and I was able to fire off a burst of images.
This bird breeds in Texas, 3 known places in Oklahoma and in Northern Mexcio. In 1987 it was placed on the endangered list with only about 350 known birds left. At that time, The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service joined forces with the states of Oklahoma and Texas, the U.S. Army, private landowners and non-governmental organizations to protect and recover the vireo. In April of 2018 they celebrated the partnership of all involved in the recovery and with almost 14,000 birds it was delisted.
Scientific name: Vireo atricapilla

Charming capture of this cute bird, and thanks so much for the information about the success of getting this bird off the endangered list. Need good news like this more often!
