Description
This large male black bear, walked out of a cornfield, not 20 yards away, while I was watching and photographing a group of females and cubs, across the field near the tree line. He looked at me, then ambled away, and crossed a canal, and headed for the woods. Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in Eastern North Carolina is home to some of the largest black bear in the country!

I would love to learn about the historical interaction between these bears and people in this region of North Carolina.
Fon Denton replied:
Lorena, honestly, it's a love/hate relationship. This part of our state is prime bear habitat, and it is also farming country. The bears raid the crops for food (corn, soybeans, etc) and they are not tidy. I have seen aerial photos that look like crop circles, so farmers lose money to bears every year that is not covered by standard crop insurance. The state and federal government protects them on the refuges, but bears don't know the boundaries. Bear hunting is also prevalent, and some farmers are hosting bear hunts in winter to supplement their losses. When managed right, the hunting is not a bad thing as it helps keep the population under control. Our bear population has grown tenfold over the last 20 years, so it's working! Then there are the "conservationists" who are both educated and supportive of management, and those who know nothing but love the bears and oppose any management on principle. Makes for interesting times.

This is not only the biggest bear I could ever imagine seeing, his coat is so healthy and luxurious looking! Great capture!
Fon Denton replied:
Thank you, Jane! They live a good life on the refuges, here, with plenty of food, year around.
