Description
"Bent County Jail and Courthouse, Las Animas, Colorado" by Catherine Sherman.
The two-story Bent County Jail in Las Animas, Colorado, was built of red brick and sandstone in 1902 and served as the county jail until 2000. The downstairs contained the residential quarters for the sheriff and family. Bent County is in southeastern Colorado.
Behind the jail is the courthouse, which opened in 1889 after three years of construction. Both buildings, as part of a courthouse complex, were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
The NRHP application describes the courthouse architectural style as "Victorian Institutional with Romanesque arches and window heads. The main roof is modified mansard with the lesser roofs being mostly hipped."
