Description
This almost abstract landscape was taken on John Wing Trail in Brewster, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Wing's Island is located behind the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History on Route 6A. Venture behind the museum and over the boardwalk and you are in for a treat. The planked boardwalk takes you across the marsh, then up onto the forested island (complete with a mini-Stonehenge-like solar calendar used by the native Americans who inhabited the area. Finally you’re on a beach looking at Cape Cod Bay! The 122-acre property, includes almost 12 acres of Cape Cod Bay beach, 32.5 acres of uplands, and over 77 acres of tidal saltwater marshland. Wing’s Island is now under the direct management authority of the Town of Brewster Board of Selectmen. The Town of Brewster acquired the Wing’s Island property through a series of purchases from private owners.
On the east side of Wing’s Island there is an area of sand dune habitat. American Beach Grass is the dominant plant here and it is extremely important for securing the sand against the eroding forces of the tides. Several other common dune plants are found here including Beach Pea, Tall Wormwood, Dusty Miller, Seaside Goldenrod, and Beach Plum. This area provides a home for Fowler’s Toads and Hognose snake and possibly Diamond-backed Terrapin, a federally endangered species. Throughout the property non-native invasive plant species can be found, including Japanese Honeysuckle, Oriental Bittersweet, and Phragmites.
In this image, I liked the contrasts between the green grasses and the light sand which was damp from tides and recent rains. The birds were a bonus.
I am an exhibiting artist in southwest Florida and my art has been exhibited in galleries in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina and is in collections nationwide. I create abstract photography, mixed media photo painting, acrylic mixed media, and acrylic paintings. Many would make great decorative throw pillows or shower curtains.
