Description
The roads less traveled take us to destinations far from the crowd.
It’s not easy traveling these roads – not only because they are not smoothly paved, but because they frequently don’t seem to be going anyplace, if we define anyplace as an urban shopping mall, an historical museum in the city, or a park surrounded by busy streets.
These roads wind and wend, gently working their way around the landscape, encouraging us to slow down our busy lives and forget about our schedule for awhile. If we’re late, we’re really not going to get there any faster by pushing on the accelerator, and in the process of worrying about it, we miss the beauty and the quiet surrounding us.
Backroads, the artwork, encourages us to step into the landscape and follow the road where it leads. Around one corner, we see the road for a few hundred yards before it rounds another corner in the other direction. Walking, hiking, or even in the car, we get the idea that the road is steeply moving up, and as it does so, the landscape opens out into a vista of the area around us.
Trees leaning into the road remind us that we are not in an urban setting – there are no city workers out trimming the branches so that they don’t brush against the roof of our car, or drop leaves and seeds atop. This is the country – a place of quiet and peace, of tranquility and calm, of space enough to see the clouds and time enough to breathe deeply of clean, crisp air.
On an afternoon drive through these country roads, we turn off the car radio or CD player, toss the phone in the glove compartment, and simply focus on negotiating the twists and turns, everyone of which leads us to a new vista – a meadow, a copse of trees, a stream embankment, a glorious display of clouds in the sky.
Slow down. Detox. Take the backroads that the crowds miss.

Ah, Steve! Thank you for memories of Sunday rides...quieter times... unhurried travel...frequent stops...stretching one’s legs and picking leaves... Smelling the fragrance of earth and decaying leaves....of brisk wind and inviting chimney smoke from hidden homes...of magical rock collection finds in mica speckled roadside pebbles, ...of a magical apple orchard ending ... of fresh squeezed unpasteurized apple cider...perhaps grape jelly....perhaps Vermont cheddar cheese and hardtack biscuits! Oh...what MAGIC lurks in paintings filled with off the beaten path “ Backroads”??? Thank you for the glimpses that are flooding my memory at this moment... L/F
