Avocet Stroll Along the River by Debra Martz American This American Avocet is in its winter/non-breeding plumage. During breeding season this elegant bird dons a chic rusty head and neck that turns grayish white after breeding. As the Avocet wades through shallow water, it sweeps its bill side to side for aquatic invertebrates. It is a migratory bird and I saw very few still at the Great Salt Plains Lake near Jet, Oklahoma on this last trip.

This was my first, too. I always saw them when in breeding season on the south Texas Gulf Coast. Now living in northern OK, I saw them in fall migration...
