Gullfoss is one of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls, located in the canyon of the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland It is very easy to access as part of the Golden Circle route. In Icelandic, Gullfoss means “Golden Waterfall”, because on a sunny day, the water takes on a golden-brown colour.
When we were planning our trip to Iceland we had first to decide when we should go. Most tourists visit the land of fire and ice during summer when the days are long and the weather is as good as it can get. For a photographer though it's not that good to have tourist attractions filled with tourists taking selfies! Other than that we wanted to experience the Northern Lights, if we were lucky. So we decided to visit Iceland in Autumn, late September to early October. And that was a great choice!
In this photo you can see the Northern Lights, aka Aurora Borealis dancing over the powerful waterfall. The sky is filled with beautiful green and purple tones. We stayed in this location for many hours. We had an amazing sunset a few hours ago. But when we saw that there was a prediction for high northern lights activity we couldn't leave. We stayed in our car eating some snacks and when the night fell the northern lights appeared! Despite the strong winds we got our cameras and went out to take pictures of the Aurora. We got soaking wet from the water spray but it was totally worth it! That was the first time I saw this spectacular natural phenomenon! Such an everlasting memory!
