Description
An electrical thunderstorm lightning discharge above the McDowell Mountains in Scottsdale Arizona. During July and August you can watch nightly shows of lightning striking around these mountains and desert. The McDowells share borders with the cities of Fountain Hills, Scottsdale, and Maricopa County. The city of Scottsdale has made its share of the McDowells a preserve, and has set up a wide trail network in partnership with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. When lightning strikes sand or rock, the extreme heat can fuse minerals beneath the surface into a tube called a fulgurite. The energy contained in a single lightning strike can power a 100 Watt light bulb for 90 days. In the Middle Ages it was believed that church bells expelled evil spirits. Thunder and lightning were regarded as diabolical, so during a thunderstorm monks tried to constantly ring the bells. As a result the victims of lightning very often were bell-ringers.
