"Tora! Tora! Tora!" - Afternoon overcast photograph of the recently renovated Ford Island Control Tower with orange and white colored stripes, a.k.a. Ford Island Radio Tower or Building S84), including the adjacent building and Aerological tower.
From Hollywood movies such as “Tora! Tora! Tora!” and “Pearl Harbor”, you might think the Ford Island Control Tower (with orange and white colored stripes, a.k.a. Ford Island Radio Tower or Building S84) was fully operational during the December 7th, 1941 attack .... No, truth is, the tower was actually under construction when the attack occurred - the control area was not at the top of the tower yet, and was in the building (building with the smaller “Aerological Tower” on top of it) at the base of the main tower. The Ford Island Control Tower was completed in 1942, 5 months after the attack.
The Ford Island Control Tower is registered as a Category One structure in the Pearl Harbor Naval Base Historic Preservation Plan of 1978. After being left to rust for decades, a $7.5 Million restoration project began in 2011 to renovate the iconic Tower, complete with an elevator system to take the public to the top…It was slated to open in Sept. 2020, but the Coronavirus pandemic may potentially push the opening date further out …
